No Cost Extension
A no–cost extension (NCE) extends the project period beyond the original project end date. As the phrase “no cost” suggests, there is no additional funding.
NIH
1st NCE
1st NCE may be submitted upto 90 days prior to the project end date.
Please complete the following and submit to OSP:
- Send your email request to awards@uic.edu using following verbiage in the subject line:
Notification of No-Cost Extension on Grant [complete NIH grant number] - Use the following verbiage in the body:
UIC Banner Grant and Fund Number (Ex. Exxxx-4xxxxx)
This is to notify you of action taken in agreement with the “expanded authorities” per the PHS Grants Policy Statement for the above referenced grant, which was scheduled to terminate on [date]. The revised termination date is [date].
I certify that the extension is not being exercised for the purpose of using the unobligated balance, is not prohibited by the terms and conditions of the Federal award and is not to request additional Federal funds. Further, it does not involve any change in the approved objectives or scope of the project.

- OSP will review the request and extend the project end date via the NIH Commons.
- An email, providing confirmation of the revised project end date, will be forwarded by OSP.
2nd NCE
2nd NCE must be submitted no later than 45 days prior to the project end date. Please complete the following and submit to OSP:
- Send your email request to awards@uic.edu using following verbiage in the subject line:
Request for a 2nd No-Cost Extension on Grant [complete NIH grant number] - Include the following information:
- The extension period requested, no more than 12 months.
- The amount of funds remaining.
- A detailed budget and budget justification reflecting your proposed plans to use the remaining funds during the extension.
- A scientific rationale for continuing the project including an explanation of work to be done during the extension.
- Explain in detail why you could not finish your project on time.
NSF
1st and 2nd NCE
- Complete and route the no-cost extension request in Research.gov website.
- Send an email to awards@uic.edu notifying OSP of NCE submission
