This 90-min session will comprise a deep dive into the NSF CAREER program from the perspective of two UIC faculty with fresh experience as NSF Program Directors. It will provide an overview of the CAREER program, including how the merit review process is managed across NSF Directorates and characteristics of strong proposals. The last 30 min will be allocated for questions. This session is the first in a multi-part series the Office of Research Development is offering on NSF CAREER.

Presenters:

Laura Anderson, Ph.D.

Dr. Anderson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and recently completed a two-year rotation as a Program Director in the Division of Chemistry in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) Directorate, where she served in the Chemical Catalysis (CAT) and Chemical Synthesis (SYN) core programs. Dr. Anderson is currently serving as an NSF Expert in CAT and is continuing to participate in other directorate- and foundation-wide initiatives focused on broadening participation and AI.

Karl Rockne, Ph.D.

Dr. Rockne is a Professor in the Department of Civil, Materials, and Environmental Engineering and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering. He recently completed a term as a Program Director in the Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental and Transport Systems (CBET) in the Engineering (ENG) Directorate, where he was responsible for Environmental Engineering and Sustainability Cluster.
