Physician Sunshine Act Data Reporting Expansion

Dear Vice Chancellor Barish and HSC Deans,

On January 1, 2021, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments database will expand coverage to include five new provider types: physician assistants, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, certified registered nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologist assistants, and certified nurse-midwives.  Information collected during 2021 will be reported beginning June 30, 2022.  A reminder will follow that data reported in Open Payments require your review to ensure accuracy, beginning in June 2022.

You should alert your faculty and practitioners to the expanded coverage and inform all faculty and practitioners to be mindful that payments or transfers of value made by a company may be reportable in Open Payments.[1]  You should also remind your faculty and practitioners that the University Policy on Conflict of Commitment and Interest requires that disclosures of non-University activities through START myDisclosures must be consistent with the information reported in the Open Payments database.  Additional guidance is available in the FAQs: Physician Payments Sunshine Act[2].

For questions or assistance, please contact Jacquelyn Jancius, Director, Office of Conflict of Commitment and Interest, at Jancius@uic.edu or (312) 996-4070.

Sincerely,
Joanna Groden, PhD
Vice Chancellor for Research
