This 90-min session will comprise a deep dive into the NSF CAREER program from the perspective of a current NSF Program Director in the Biological Sciences Directorate. It will provide an overview of the CAREER program, including how the merit review process is managed across NSF Directorates and characteristics of strong proposals. The last 30 min will be allocated for questions. This session is part of the 2022 NSF CAREER Proposal Development Series, hosted by the Office of Research Development.

Presenter:

Matthew Buechner is a permanent Program Director since late 2020 in the Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences of the NSF Biological Sciences Directorate, where his program responsibility is Cellular Dynamics and Function.  Matthew studied bacterial ion channels as a grad student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, then switched to the nematode C. elegans as a postdoc at Johns Hopkins before moving to a position at the University of Kansas at Lawrence in 1996.  His research focuses on the subcellular movement of organelles and proteins to form narrow single-celled tubes such as are found in our capillaries or lung sacs, pollen tubes, using the nematode excretory cell as a model.

Matthew’s presentation will focus on writing a great CAREER funding proposal for NSF, including aspects of how NSF grant proposals are reviewed, special sections of the CAREER award, and how to decide whether to submit a CAREER or standard proposal.  If there is time, we can also discuss the new NSF BIO fellowships for beginning postdoctoral fellows.
