While the National Institutes of Health (NIH) remains the largest funder of biomedical research in the federal government, much has shifted in the agency’s operations, personnel and priorities since January 2025. In this first session of a webinar series on “NIH, Then and Now,” a federal relations expert from Lewis-Burke Associates LLC will provide an overview of the current state of play for the NIH, including information about political, budgetary and policy changes that impact university researchers. The presentation will cover the research themes articulated in the agency’s Unified Strategy as well as those that align with broader Administration priorities like the Make America Healthy Again agenda, as well as include discussion of recent, ongoing and proposed changes to NIH funding mechanisms and review processes. This session aims to support researchers in navigating the “new normal” of the NIH while providing practical insights to inform successful engagement with program staff and proposal development.
