DPI Cycle 1 Seed Funding award selection is complete. A list of funded proposals are available here.
DPI Cycle 2 Seed Funding proposals are still under review. We expect this process to continue for several weeks.  We recognize that the original Cycle 2 start date was March, but the review process for both cycles has taken considerably longer than anticipated. We appreciate your patience!

UIC announces a new program to catalyze UIC-led activities in support of the University of Illinois System’s Discovery Partners Institute (DPI). The UIC DPI Seed Program advances the mission of the DPI by investing up to $10 million from UIC’s royalties’ revenue accumulated at the System level to be used as “seed funds” for projects that will support the development of DPI. The UIC DPI Seed Program is created to align new UIC activities with the DPI’s priorities and mission. For more information on the DPI, see The Chancellor’s Office will be soliciting applications over several cycles targeting the broad areas of big data and cybersecurity; drug discovery and healthcare delivery innovations; and automated vehicles and mobility. Applications in other areas that still meet the review criteria below are also welcome. Projects may consist of research, education and engagement activities, including interdisciplinary collaborations, and should be 6 months to 2 years in duration.

  • Applications for Cycle 1 are due November 1, 2018, 5:00 pm, with a project start in February, 2019. Budgets for Cycle 1 should not exceed $100,000 during the project period.
  • Applications for Cycle 2 are due January 18, 2019, 5:00 pm, with a project start in March, 2019. Budgets for Cycle 2 should not exceed $250,000 during the project period.

Application budgets should reflect actual needs of the proposed project. Target areas are the same for both cycles; Cycle 1 deadline is to rapidly fund smaller projects of more limited scope, whereas Cycle 2 deadline accommodates larger projects that require more time to prepare. If awarded, Project Director(s)/Principal Investigator(s) will be required to submit progress reports every 6 months and a final report at the conclusion of the project period. Templates for submitting progress reports will be distributed to awardees. The Project Director(s)/Principal Investigator(s) may submit more than one application for any cycle, provided the objectives of each application are distinctly different. Applications may include multiple Project Directors/Principal Investigators, as long as the individuals have complementary and integrated expertise. The contact Project Director/Principal Investigator must be a UIC faculty member with at least 0.5 FTE appointment at UIC at the time of the application and for the duration of the project period. All funds requested should be expended on UIC activities (i.e., no subcontracts are allowed to other organizations). Unpaid consultants or external contributors are allowed.

The UIC DPI Seed Program intends to fund up to 10 awards per Cycle (10 in Cycle 1, 10 in Cycle 2). However, the actual number of awards funded is contingent upon the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. The Chancellor’s office, in collaboration with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, will conduct a review of applications and awards to determine the processes used for future funding cycles.
